Transportations in Hong Kong

MTR

MTR is one of the most used public transports in Hong Kong. Using MTR services enables you to go to most of the towns in Hong Kong because of its extensive coverage of branches and junctions. The service ends at approximately 12am so make sure that you have enough time to leave by MTR when you have an event at night.

Minibus

Minibus services cover the rest of the transportation system. It connects remote villages and estates to public transport terminals and MTR stations, helping the residents to go outside. Fares may get expensive at late night.

Tram

This is one of the best value transport on Hong Kong Island because you can ride from Shau Kei Wan to Kennedy Town with less than $3. However, this service is provided exclusively on Hong Kong Island and it is very slow when comparing to other transports like MTR and bus.

Bus

Bus services are seen almost everywhere in Hong Kong. This transport is a little bit slower than the others as it has to take passengers at bus stops. However, it remains a solid choice to ride on if you want to go to some places where MTR cannot reach. There are only a few routes that provide service at late night (usually starts with the prefix N) so gather more information about the routes beforehand.

Taxi

Speed and comfort of a private car. Doesn't need to know how to drive at all as driver does that all. 24/7 service. As a result, you might have to pay for more than you wish.

Ferry

Ferry is a transport to use when you want to go across the harbour or visit some of the remote islands in Hong Kong. The travel time might take longer than other means.

To conclude...

The use of transport depends on how you plan on your journey. It will be ideal when you can keep the cost as low as possible while achieving acceptable travel time. Here is a table showing the characteristics of the transport in a very precise way.

Please be aware that the cost is directly proportional to the distance of travel in most cases. The cost of travelling in a taxi or ferry can be very high depending on the toll of the tunnels and the routes taken respectively.
